The\u00a0sequence of numbers and letters that we find on the sidewall of our tyres\u00a0contains relevant information about their features, performance and\u00a0maintenance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This information also indicates that the tyre complies with the\u00a0necessary safety standards, and is ready for its use on the road.<\/span><\/p>

Although\u00a0the number of codes, symbols and acronyms present on a tyre\u2019s sidewall might be\u00a0a bit overwhelming for some, they are easy to interpret if you know their
meaning.<\/span><\/p>

On today\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>post, we are going to unravel the meaning of all these figures, letters and\u00a0<\/span>symbols that might seem confusing at first glance.<\/span><\/p>

1. Tyre Size and Aspect Ratio <\/span><\/b><\/h2>

If we look\u00a0at the top of the tyre (assuming the wheel is in the right position and not\u00a0upside down), we\u2019ll see the first sequence of numbers and letters.<\/span><\/p>

It usually\u00a0begins with a letter, which indicates the type of vehicle the tyre is meant to\u00a0be used in (P, for passenger car, L for light truck tyre, and so on\u2026).<\/span><\/p>

Next, we\u00a0see three numbers, which indicate the measurement of the tyre from sidewall to\u00a0sidewall in millimetres.<\/span><\/p>

2. Construction and Diameter<\/span><\/b><\/h2>

The next\u00a0two numbers that we see are separated by a bar and indicate the tyre\u2019s aspect\u00a0ratio, which is the percentage of the tyre\u2019s height compared to its width.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This\u00a0number is usually followed by a letter, which indicates the construction of the\u00a0tyre (R for radial, B for belted, D for diagonal\u2026) and the diameter of the\u00a0wheel in inches.<\/span><\/p>

3. Load Index and Speed Rating<\/span><\/b><\/h2>

Next to the\u00a0diameter we find the load index. A tyre\u2019s load index indicates its maximum loading\u00a0capacity when it has the right inflation pressure.<\/span><\/p>

In passenger tyres for\u00a0instance, indexes range from 75 to 105. <\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0letter next to the load index indicates the speed rating. Speed ratings indicate\u00a0the maximum speed of a tyre when it is correctly inflated and under load.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For\u00a0instance, a tyre with a speed symbol \u201cQ\u201d is equivalent to a speed of 160 Km\/h,\u00a0and if the symbol is\u00a0\u201cH\u201d, the recommended speed would be 210 km\/h.<\/span><\/p>

4. M+S Symbol (Severe Snow Conditions)<\/span><\/b><\/h2>

The letters\u00a0M+S followed by the mountain or snowflake symbol indicate that the tyre meets\u00a0the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) standards for its use in severe snow\u00a0conditions.<\/span><\/p>

The M+S symbol can also indicate that it has all-season capability,\u00a0compared to summer tyres.<\/span><\/p>

5. DOT Marking<\/span><\/b><\/h2>

The acronym\u00a0“DOT” indicates that the tyre complies with the safety standards\u00a0established by the US Department of Transportation (DOT).<\/span><\/p>

6. Serial Number<\/span><\/b><\/h2>

Next to the DOT marking, we find the serial\u00a0number, which identifies how old a tyre is.\u00a0<\/span>It is a code with up to 12 numbers,\u00a0which indicate the date, week and year of manufacture.<\/p>

The different\u00a0codes printed on the sidewall of a tyre provide useful information about the\u00a0tyre, its manufacturer, and how it should be used.<\/span><\/p>

That is why knowing\u00a0 that\u00a0each code means is so important in order to ensure proper maintenance of the\u00a0tyres, while achieving maximum efficiency on the road. <\/span><\/p>
